Ayurveda (ah-yur-vay-da) is an ancient philosophy, science, medicine, and art of daily living. Ayur means “life” and veda means “knowledge.” This system has its roots in ancient India and is considered by many to be the oldest healing system in existence. Ayurveda's principles are based on the five elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The philosophy further explains how the intelligence of nature forms three fundamental, universal forces called doshas that regulate all natural processes on both macrocosmic and microcosmic levels.
In this six hour workshop, led by James Tennant, co-owner of Tejas Yoga studio in Chicago, you will come to an understanding of what these universal energies/principles are and how they relate to your psycho-physiological makeup. You will also see how they are affected by external sources. You will learn about the 20 gunas (qualities), discuss how they relate to our body-mind, and how you can use them therapeutically. This training will also help the individual assess his/her own body and mind to know when it is in a balanced state and when it is imbalanced.
For each of the three doshas, you will learn:
• Main Function
• Sites of Accumulation
• Characteristics in Balance
• Characteristics out of Balance
• General Remedies, Diet, and Lifestyle
• General Principles to Apply to Asana and Pranayama
Ayurveda seeks to heal the disorder of the mind-body complex and restore wholeness and harmony to one's self. The event is open to all those with a desire to learn more about this system of healing.
